My thanks to Cheryl for pointing this story out to me:

The Hunt for Britain's Ghost Trains.

It's not about haunted steam locomotives, but about the odd trains that run on strange schedules, sometimes as rare as "one train per day, one direction only, Summer Saturdays only," usually because it's easier to run such trains than to go through the formal abandonment procedure.

That was utterly fascinating! I had a brief taste of the UK's rail privitization scheme around 2000 when I went over as part of my company's attempt to win the business of the England, Wales and Scotland railway. It was so strange to be in a place where freight trains had to move aside so the passenger trains went through.
