I went to the endodontist this afternoon, where they took a CT scan of my head. A short time later, the doctor came in and gave me the good news: the dark spot on the X-ray at the dentist is not an abscess, and I do not need a root canal. Now I still do have some temperature sensitivity on that tooth, but it's much less than it was a year ago, so I guess we will just keep watching it. For now, no dental work needed, and I was in and out of their office in just a few minutes after paying the portion of the service not covered by insurance or in my deductible.

A good part about getting in and out so quickly is that I was able to get out of Reno before the afternoon rush began, and I was back home shortly after 3 PM.

I started putting my future medical/dental appointments into my calendar when I realized that the date for my next dental cleaning fell during Worldcon! No problem, though; I gave them a call and they rescheduled it for a week earlier.
kevin_standlee: (Kreegah Bundalo)
Yesterday's dentist appointment was not bad by itself. (The hygienist complemented me about how good a job I'm doing on keeping my teeth cleaned.) However the X-rays combined with how I still have temperature sensitivity on the lower right tooth that they re-capped last year, led the dentist to refer me to an endodontist for further evaluation. There is a dark spot under the root that may be an infection. If so, I'll need a root canal.

This afternoon, after returning from an unrelated medical appointment, I got a call from the endodontist's office. Astonishingly, they can see me on Thursday afternoon. They'll scan the tooth with their equipment, and if I need the root canal, they can do it that afternoon. They say that they can do the procedure in less than an hour, which would be amazing if it works. I wasn't keeping track, but the last root canal I had, years ago, seemed to take hours, and it's the keeping your mouth cranked open for such a long time that makes the procedure such a pain, literally.

Icy

I went out on the front porch this morning just after 8 AM. It had rained a little bit this morning. The temperature was hovering around freezing, and the overcast from the rain meant that there was no sun. As I was looking to see if Amtrak was about to pass on time, my feet went out from under me and down I went. I was pretty lucky in that I did not land that hard, but it was still startling. It could have been far worse. I gingerly got back on my feet just as the California Zephyr went by.

Later today, I have a dentist appointment in Reno. I think it's generally safe for me to go. My nose continues to run, but that's from the Ozempic. The rest of the cold seems to have passed. I'll see what they think at the dentist's office.

Crown Me

Jan. 16th, 2024 07:27 pm

Today I went to the dentist to have the two replacement gold crowns fitted. When I was there two weeks ago for the removal of the second crown, I forgot to ask for them to give me the crown, and when I asked about it, they said they didn't have it. I wonder if they actually discard old gold dental work or just set it aside for a party fund or something like that.

Fitting the upper right replacement crown went smoothly. This is the tooth on which I had a root canal many years ago. The lower right tooth, which is still "live," was much more difficult, and I had to ask them to anesthetize it before they cleaned the tooth and fitted the permanent crown.

After the appointment, I went to Reno Gold Exchange to see what I could get for the crown that I did salvage.

Found Money )

That lower right tooth is still very temperature sensitive, and my jaw does still hurt a bit, although not as much as it did when I had the temporary crowns in place. The dentist said to give it a couple of days and if it hasn't "calmed down" to give them a call and they'll have another look at it.

That money for the crown is "found money" of a sort, and I'm considering if perhaps I should use it to place a bet on the San Francisco 49ers to win the Super Bowl. The last odds I heard for the 49ers to win were +175, meaning that my $50 bet would win $137.50 if they take the trophy.

Today I again took a half-day off from work for a dentist appointment. As I explained from my first visit, I need two crowns removed and redone, and each procedure would by itself use my entire annual dental insurance coverage, so we split it into two visits, one in December and one in January, so each visit will apply to a different coverage year. It still leaves me with around $600 that's my responsibility, but I can charge it against my healthcare savings account, so I'm not out of pocket.

The crown to be removed today is on the lower right of my jaw, directly below the one I had removed last month. But for whatever reason, this one seemed to be more difficult to remove. Moreover, they needed to remove the other temporary crown as well because they did the measurements for both crowns today. Eventually (about two hours total), they put both temporary crowns on and I was free to go, with an appointment for two weeks from today, which is when the crowns should come back from the lab.

My lower right jaw is throbbing from the work done on that tooth. I hope aspirin will help ease the pain.
kevin_standlee: (Kevin and Lisa)
If you've been following me, you know that Lisa has been having difficulty finding a dentist who listens to her concerns about keeping their clients safe from COVID. After multiple failed attempts with larger practices that made big promises but in practice had everyone unmasked and in communal setting more akin to a hair salon than a dentist's office, we decided to look for a smaller, single-dentist practice. The initial result was promising. This was only an initial visit for X-rays and evaluation. Fortunately, there are no signs of trouble, but Lisa does need a thorough cleaning. Because of our scheduled trip to Winnipeg, the first time that their office and our schedule mesh is mid-August, but at least it looks like we can work with them and they won't ignore her concerns.
kevin_standlee: (Reno)
Yesterday, we tried once again to establish a new dentist for Lisa. Traffic into Reno was light.

Short Trip to Reno )

Unfortunately, once again the description and assurances about preserving patient health did not match the reality, as everyone seems convinced that COVID is over and moreover, it never existed in the first place, so let's all forget everything we ever learned about keeping people safe. Lisa walked out.

Trying to make the most of having made the trip, we went to two grocery stores, ending with the Raley's at McCarran and Pyramid in Sparks. We got away from the store about 3:30 PM and I hoped that we'd be able to get home as fast as we'd come to town. However, as soon as we got on the freeway, traffic ground to a halt. At first we thought it was just a short backup, but things got worse. Having spent 45 minutes to go the roughly 6 km from Raley's, I turned on the radio to hear the traffic report. There had apparently been multiple accidents starting just past Vista Blvd (where I-80 leaves Sparks and enters the Truckee River Canyon) and continuing as far as Mustang (another roughly 8 km east). Traffic was at a standstill.

Alternative routes are long, but at the rate we were going, it would have been faster to walk home, so we decided to bail out. Thanks to Lisa catching the eye of a friendly truck driver in the lane to our right, we were able to exit at the last possible Sparks exit (Vista Blvd.), and from there we went on a very roundabout alternative route.

Long Trip Home )

I did not learn whether the multiple accidents on eastbound I-80 between Vista and Mustang were cleared by the time we got home, but even if they did, I know I liked that drive up to Pyramid Lake and back home much better than I would have liked sitting in stalled traffic for two hours.
kevin_standlee: (Reno)
I had today off for the holiday, but the dentist who has worked on Lisa in the past was working today, and so we went to Reno for what would have been Lisa's first dental appointment since 2019. It was a big disappointment.

Ignoring COVID Precautions )

When even the people in the medical care industry don't take COVID precautions seriously, it's no wonder that lots of other people do not do so, either. COVID isn't over, and if people keep acting like this, it never will be.
kevin_standlee: (Kevin and Lisa)
I took Lisa to the specialist dentist in Reno this morning for an initial examination regarding her toothache. It took a bit longer than maybe it should have done ideally, but part of that was due to them squeezing her in, so the office was a little crowded. The conclusion is that she needs additional work, but will need to complete the run of antibiotics to knock down the infection that was the tip of the iceberg here. We've made an appointment to have the multiple pieces of work done in a couple of weeks. I'm glad I have a Healthcare Savings Account, because the work will soak up all of our dental insurance's annual dental work allowance and then some.

Dental Day

May. 23rd, 2016 05:50 pm
kevin_standlee: (Pensive Kevin)
This morning I headed up to Redwood Shores for a 7:10 AM dentist appointment. Fortunately, at that hour, traffic along US-101 is tolerable. Indeed, I actually got their early. The teeth cleaning was routine. My dentist had a look at the grooves on the top of my lower front teeth and said that he recommended that we do something about them. I've had them for a long time because I was grinding my teeth at night. I wear a mouth-guard while sleeping now to prevent further damage, but Dr. Ferrer warned me that the teeth could start chipping and cracking. He'd had a cancellation that morning, and I didn't have any meetings until Noon (and had shifted responsibilities around with a co-worker so he would cover the "east coast" desk this morning), so I agreed.

For this process, my dentist didn't even have to numb the teeth. He ground off a little bit of the grooved area, then built it back up again, and shaped it into place and set it with a bright light tool. You would never know by looking at me that any work had been done. I can feel the smoother teeth, though. With relatively little fuss (and insurance will pay for 60% of it, with my healthcare saving account covering the rest), I was out of there and into traffic so early that the morning commute was still on. No harm, though.

The only drawback of the procedure: He told me to only eat soft foods for the next 24 hours (until tomorrow mid-morning), and while hot drinks might be okay, he recommended against coffee or tea because they could end up staining the material until it has completely set. That means no coffee, tea, or cola for me until tomorrow. Today has been a day of grogginess accordingly. But I'm glad to have the teeth repaired.

By The Bay

May. 19th, 2015 09:01 am
kevin_standlee: (Kevin Sketch)
I was too tired after getting back from last night's BASFA meeting to fire up the computer and post anything, but there wasn't much to say from me anyway. I got down to the Bay Area on Sunday night, and Sunday morning nursed my minivan to my mechanic's shop and walked over to Enterprise rent-a-car, collected my rental, and drove to my dentist for a periodic cleaning and check-up. My dentist recommends that the next time I'm in his office (November), we also replace two very old fillings on one side of my mouth, then do the other two old fillings on the other side the following spring. This preventive maintenance seems like a good idea and also fits within the annual dental benefits on my healthcare coverage.

Because I didn't drive the RV, I'm staying in a (cheap by Bay Area standards) motel not too far from my office. Nevertheless, this will be a very expensive week. How expensive overall depends on what my mechanic finds wrong with the Astro.
kevin_standlee: (Kevin and Lisa)
Originally, Lisa was to come with me today and spend the week in the Bay Area with me. However, we've had an emergency change of plans. The temporary crown on the tooth that had the root canal has broken, so she needs to see her dentist urgently (like Monday if possible). So I'll be heading back to the Bay on my own this morning, we've canceled the appointment we had for her on Monday to have her eyes checked with my ophthalmologist, and she'll try to get to her dentist ASAP.

If Lisa can get her tooth squared away, she'll drive down and join me later in the week. We have tickets for the BASFA Baseball Outing this coming Friday. Also, we have plans to substantially clean out my storage locker in Yuba City, or at least get it to the point where everything left in it will fit in my minivan one load at at time. It's inconvenient and more expensive to have to convoy, but we'll survive.

Crowned

Lisa's dentist in Fernley was able to see her this afternoon for the post-root-canal crown work. This is good because it otherwise might have been a couple of weeks before the next window. Lisa now has a temporary crown and will be back in two weeks to have the permanent crown fitted. The day after that we get to see a TMD specialist in Reno. Lisa will have spent a whole lot of time in dentists' chairs.

Rooted

The root-canal specialist's office in Reno called mid-morning and asked if Lisa could come early. I was able to rearrange my work schedule, and we were there for 2 PM. The root canal procedure itself went pretty well, she says. I was able to get some Day Jobbe stuff done by dint of connecting my computer to my smartphone and bridging in the internet that way. Although the original plan was to head straight home, Lisa asked me to take her to Whole Foods to get more bread (they'd been out of the bread she likes when we went there yesterday, but had more today). By then she felt up to having something to eat, but nothing that required chewing, so we stopped off at Jamba Juice and then headed home to Fernley through Reno's version of rush-hour traffic.

Tomorrow we need to contact Lisa's dentist here in Fernley to arrange to have the tooth in question capped.
kevin_standlee: (Conrunner Kevin)
I knew I had a dental appointment coming up soon, but I'd forgotten to write it down or enter it into my scheduling software after the last appointment, and I'd forgotten to call the dentist's office to check the data. Fortunately, I got a reminder postcard today, and even more fortunately, the appointment is during the next two-week stint I plan to be in the Bay Area, so I don't need to reschedule it. I don't make my work schedule far enough in advance to be able to plan the appointments that far ahead of time, so sometimes when we get closer to the date, I have to ask them to reschedule. Sometimes, they've called me and said, "We have an opening this morning if you're available and want to come on in now instead of next week." I'm a pretty easy-going dental patient as things go.
kevin_standlee: (Conrunner Kevin)
As I was heading to the office today, I got a call from my dentist's office. They told me that if I came up to Redwood Shores straight away, they could replace the crown that cracked off. That's easier said than done at 7:30 AM on the first workday of the week after a long weekend. I'm not sure I got up to a speed above 25 MPH between San Jose and Palo Alto, but I did eventually get there, and they cast a new temporary crown and fitted it. I need to be much more careful for the next month. The temporary crown really is mostly there to protect the stub of the tooth and can't take a lot of pressure, so I must carefully only chew on the left side of my mouth until next month when the new crown arrives. I could get a week sooner than I'm scheduled, but I'll be working from home the week the crown gets back from the lab, so I've put off the final fitting until I get back to the Bay Area.
kevin_standlee: (Tennis)
I had an early-morning dentist appointment in Redwood Shores, so I was up at 5:30 AM to I would be sure to be able to get there in plenty of time, which I did, arriving over an hour early. But I'm sure that had I left 30 minutes later, I would have been late — traffic was already slowing as I worked my way north from San Jose at 6:30 AM.

I've now had the chipped tooth ground down and measured for a gold crown, which might end up being a little visible as it's the bicuspid forward of the molars, although not directly forward-facing. I prefer gold on a crown because it's so durable and non-reactive. There's a temporary crown in place until the permanent one comes back from the lab next month.

If I thought the morning traffic was bad, it was nothing compared to the afternoon drive, which I heard one of the KCBS traffic reporters describe as the worst traffic day she'd ever seen, and that's saying quite a lot. I have no idea what caused every freeway in the Bay Area to simultaneously freeze up, but in my case it took nearly 90 minutes to go twelve miles.

I got to the SAP open around 7:30 PM on light rail from my apartment, just as a third-set tie-breaker was being played to finish Lleyton Hewitt's singles match with Sam Querry. Querry won, but that wasn't the last we'd see of Hewitt, as it was back later than evening for the doubles match (partnered with Marinko Matosevic) against the #1 ranked Bryan Brothers. (Top seeded Milos Raonic defeated Michael Russell 6-3, 7-5 in the first evening-session match.) To my surprise, Hewitt/Matosevic took the Bryans the distance and won the "match tiebreaker" played in doubles matches these days to upset the top doubles seeds 6-4, 6-7 (5), 10-7.

There was another doubles match to play, but it was after 10:30 PM and I have to work on Friday, so I headed back toward the light rail station. Rather than wait ten minutes for the train at San Fernando station, I "cut across" to Santa Clara, but that just meant I ended up catching the same Civic Center-bound light rail train I would have caught in the first place. That train unfortunately terminates one stop short of Gish, where I was going. I had the choice of waiting twelve minutes for the following Baypointe train or walking. I decided to walk. Google maps says it's 1.4 km. It was a draw, with me getting to Gish just as that following light rail train did. In the end, I walked 2.5 of the approximately 5 km between my apartment and the Shark Tank. Oh, well, it's good exercise.
kevin_standlee: (IKEA)
I worked from the apartment this morning before heading up to Redwood Shores to have my dentist fit the two permanent crowns on my right lower rear teeth.

The crowns don't fit )

After the dental disappointment, I tried to work my way back south along US-101, which even at that time of day was heavily crowded. I stopped at IKEA to return three of the extra shelves I'd bought last week. (Lisa decided, after examining the shelf-extension units and seeing how the extra shelves fit, that we didn't need quite as many extra shelves.) The returns process there was relatively painless, since we hadn't opened the packaging and I had the receipt.

Ignoring the side-trip into IKEA, it took nearly an hour to go from Redwood Shores to Mountain View this afternoon, and that was at about 2 PM. Now part of that can be attributed to the construction going on there, but wow, is that traffic bad.

Ouch

Jul. 25th, 2012 06:11 pm
kevin_standlee: (Kreegah Bundalo)
While I could probably have dragged myself into work today, I had no in-person meetings scheduled and it seemed tolerable for me to work from home, so I did. I even managed one video-conference meeting, which was just a one-on-one talk with the person in question, but did prove that the technology would indeed work from my home connection, which bodes well for the future.

So a bit after noon I started to make some lunch, part of which included some relatively soft gouda cheese. I've been trying to chew only on the left side of my mouth because of the temporary crowns on the rear lower right two teeth, but a bit of cheese got over to the wrong side. And grabbed hold of my crowns and popped them off.

More Dental TMI )

My dentist's office normally closes at 1 PM on Thursdays. Dr. Ferrer stuck around until after 1 PM and worked on me, and was very good about it. I'm very grateful, because it would have been very difficult to eat without the crowns in place protecting my ground-down teeth. I like my dentist. If you're looking for a good, professional dentist in the Redwood City area, I'd love to refer you to Dr. Anthony Ferrer.
